A photo thumbnail that turns grey, a gallery that reports an error, or a folder that suddenly appears empty can feel like a permanent loss. If you are asking how to recover corrupted photos, the first decision matters more than the first tool you download: stop using the affected device before new data overwrites what may still be recoverable.
Corruption does not always mean the image data has disappeared. It can mean the file system, storage medium, photo library database or the image file itself has been damaged. The correct recovery route depends on which of those has failed. A rushed repair attempt can turn a recoverable problem into a much harder one.
What corrupted photos look like
Photo corruption has several familiar symptoms. Images may show only part of the picture, display coloured blocks or grey bands, refuse to open, report an unsupported format, or have a file size of zero bytes. In other cases, files vanish from an SD card while the card still shows used space, or a phone gallery shows blank thumbnails after an update, crash or interrupted transfer.

On an iPhone or Android device, photos can appear corrupt because the gallery database is damaged, the phone has insufficient free space, an update failed, or a cloud library has not completed syncing. Avoid factory-resetting a phone that holds the only copy of the images.
