How to Recover an Inaccessible USB Drive

A USB drive can become inaccessible without warning: one moment it holds a client presentation, family photographs or years of accounts; the next, Windows asks to format it, reports “USB device not recognised”, or shows an empty drive. If you need to know how to recover an inaccessible USB drive, the first priority is not finding the quickest repair command. It is preventing a recoverable fault from becoming permanent data loss.

Do not format the drive, initialise it, or keep reconnecting it in the hope that it will suddenly work. Those actions can overwrite file-system information or place extra strain on failing hardware. A careful first assessment gives you the best chance of recovering the files that matter.

First, identify what “inaccessible” means

The message you see provides useful clues, but it is not a diagnosis on its own. A USB drive may be detected by the computer but refuse to open, appear in File Explorer without a drive letter, display the wrong capacity, or ask to be formatted. In more serious cases, it may disconnect repeatedly, become unusually hot, make clicking sounds, or not appear anywhere on the computer.

A drive that is visible with the correct capacity but cannot be opened may have logical corruption. This can happen after removing it without using safe eject, a power interruption, malware, or a damaged file system. Recovery is often possible, but writing repair data back to the same device is a risk.

A drive that shows 0 bytes, an incorrect capacity, intermittent detection, or no detection at all may have a controller, memory chip, connector or circuit-board fault. This is not a standard software-recovery situation. Continued use can reduce the likelihood of a successful recovery.

Stop using the USB drive before trying repairs

When files are valuable, treat the USB drive as evidence rather than a working storage device. Do not save new files to it, install recovery software on it, or agree to a format prompt. Even a “quick format” can change the file-system structures recovery tools rely on.

Avoid running CHKDSK as your first response. It is designed to make a volume usable, not to preserve every existing file. If directory entries or file records are damaged, CHKDSK may remove or alter them while attempting a repair. That can be acceptable for a non-critical drive with no important data, but it is the wrong gamble for business records, legal material, original media or irreplaceable personal files.

If the drive is physically damaged, smells burnt, has a bent connector, or repeatedly connects and disconnects, unplug it. Do not open the casing or attempt soldering. USB flash drives are compact, but their recovery can require specialist chip-level work, forensic tools and controlled handling.

Safe checks you can make at home or in the office

There are a few low-risk checks worth making before escalating the case. Perform each check once or twice only. Repeated connection attempts are not a recovery strategy.

Try a different USB port directly on the computer, rather than through a hub, docking station or keyboard. If possible, test on one other computer. This helps rule out a faulty port, driver issue or power problem. Do not test the drive across numerous machines if it is unstable or becoming hot.

On Windows, open Disk Management and look for the USB device. You may find that it is present but has no drive letter, which can sometimes explain why it does not appear in File Explorer. If the partition and capacity look normal, assigning a drive letter may restore access. However, stop if Disk Management shows the drive as uninitialised, unallocated, RAW, 0 bytes or with an incorrect size. Do not initialise, create a new volume or format it.

On a Mac, Disk Utility may show whether the device is recognised by the system. As with Windows, viewing the drive is fine; erasing, partitioning or running repair functions on a drive containing critical data is not. If macOS asks to initialise the disk before it can be used, decline the request.

If your files open after changing ports or computers, copy the most important data immediately to a separate, reliable drive. Start with unique documents, current work, databases, photographs and videos. Do not assume the problem has resolved simply because the drive works once.

When recovery software may help

Software can be useful when a USB drive is stable, detected consistently and has suffered a logical problem such as accidental deletion or file-system corruption. The safest approach is to create a sector-by-sector image of the USB drive first, then run recovery software against that copy. This protects the original from further changes.

This route has limitations. A program may recover files without their original names or folder structure, particularly where the file system is severely damaged. It may also find older deleted data alongside current files. That is normal, but it means recovered material needs careful review.

Do not use software when the drive disconnects during scanning, reports an impossible capacity, fails to appear in Disk Management or Disk Utility, or has obvious physical damage. Software cannot repair a failed flash controller or read memory chips that are no longer communicating correctly. A long scan of an unstable device can turn a partial recovery into a no-recovery case.

Encryption adds another consideration. BitLocker, hardware-encrypted USB sticks and encrypted containers may be recoverable only if the encryption key, password or recovery key is available. A data recovery specialist can often restore the encrypted volume itself, but no legitimate method can bypass strong encryption without the required credentials.
