Memory cards are small, fast and convenient, but they are not immune to failure. The type of content also changes the challenge. JPEG and RAW photographs are commonly stored as separate files, while high-bitrate video may be spread across large sections of the card. Interrupted recording can leave video files without a complete index or header. Recovering the data is only part of the work – the recovered video must often be rebuilt into a playable file.

Do not format the card, even if the camera recommends it. Do not take more photographs, try several devices repeatedly, run repair software, or copy new files to the card. These actions can alter the remaining evidence of the original file structure.

Remove the card safely from the camera and place it somewhere clean, dry and protected. If it has been exposed to water, smoke, heat or physical impact, do not attempt to dry it with a hairdryer, open its casing or clean the contacts with household products. Record the basic facts while they are fresh: the camera model, card brand and capacity, error message, what happened immediately before the failure, and whether any files were copied after the incident. This information helps technicians choose the right diagnostic route and can be particularly useful where a card was used for long-form video, CCTV exports or professional photography.

Monolithic cards, common in some microSD and USB designs, contain the controller and flash within a single package. This is not a job for generic software. The data is often scrambled through wear levelling, interleaving and error-correction processes that were originally managed by the card’s controller. Use cards from reputable manufacturers, format them in the camera that will use them, and avoid removing them while the camera is writing. For important shoots, rotate labelled cards rather than filling one card repeatedly. Copy footage and photographs to two separate locations as soon as practical, then verify the transfer before reformatting the card.

The most valuable precaution is simple: when a camera displays an error, stop. Put the card aside, protect the original media and seek a controlled assessment before trying another fix. That short pause can preserve the photographs, footage and evidence that cannot be recreated.
